Sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging): It is a Technique that can be used to communicate, Detect Objects or to navigate under the Surface of water. It is of Basically two Types: Active Sonar & Passive sonar . Sonars Basically works from Infrasonic to above a Megahertz frequency Range. 405 nanometer Blue Laser: You can use it too. But you need to use Epoxy Potting Compound to Waterproof the Module. For extended Coverage you can split the laser beam using a parallel prism and than can use  Photodarlington  as a sensing element. Mount the sensing element Close to the laser. You can put a Violet-blue gel filter too to improve the Selectivity.
